V-고 있다 — an action in progress — 'I am …ing'

An action in progress — 'I am …ing'. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 2: 여보세요, 지금 뭐 하고 있어요? (Hello? What are you doing now? — on the phone).

What it means

-고 있어요 says that an action is going on — 'I am …ing'. Take 다 off the verb and add 고 있어요, the same for every verb, with or without 받침: 먹고 있어요, 보고 있어요, 숙제하고 있어요. Use it for what is happening right now (지금 음악을 듣고 있어요) and for what you are doing these days (요즘 한국어를 배우고 있어요). For an action that was going on at a time in the past, the past goes on 있다: 보고 있었어요. For an older person, 있다 becomes 계시다: 할머니께서는 주무시고 계세요.
