더 · 제일/가장 — comparing — 'more' and 'the most'

Comparing — 'more' and 'the most'. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 9: 어느 게 더 맛있어요? (Which one is tastier? — food and comparing).

What it means

To compare two things, name them with 하고 and add 중에서, 'out of': 떡볶이하고 김밥 중에서. Then put 더, 'more', just before the adjective: 떡볶이가 더 매워요, 'tteokbokki is spicier'. For three or more things, use 제일, 'the most': 한국 음식 중에서 불고기가 제일 맛있어요. 가장 means the same as 제일 and sounds a little more formal, so you see it more in writing. The thing you choose takes 이/가 — or 을/를 with verbs like 좋아하다: 딸기를 제일 좋아해요. To make the difference bigger, say 훨씬 더, 'much more'. The next grammar point adds 보다, 'than', to name the thing you compare against.
