N보다 (더) (1B 복습·확장) — than — comparing two things with 보다

Than — comparing two things with 보다. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 4: 이 옷, 좀 큰 것 같아요 (I think these clothes are a bit big — guessing and comparing).

What it means

보다 means 'than'. Put it straight after the thing you compare with; the other thing keeps 이/가 (or 은/는) as usual: 회색이 검은색보다 더 잘 어울려요, 'grey suits you better than black'. You can swap the two parts and the meaning stays the same — 검은색보다 회색이 더 잘 어울려요 — because the noun with 보다 is always the 'less' side. 보다 is the same with or without 받침. 더 'more' (Level 1B: 떡볶이가 더 매워요) usually comes along; 훨씬 means 'much more' and 조금 'a little': 시장이 백화점보다 훨씬 싸요. To say how much, put the amount before 더: 이 코트가 저 코트보다 삼만 원 더 비싸요. It works with verbs too: 저는 여름보다 겨울을 더 좋아해요. 생각보다 means 'than I thought': 생각보다 싸요! 보다 does not change the verb, so the tense works as usual.
