A/V-(으)ㄴ/는지 알다 · 모르다 — do you know where …? — a question inside a sentence
Do you know where …? — a question inside a sentence. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 7: 길을 잃으면 어떻게 해요? (What if I get lost? — asking the way).
What it means
To ask what someone knows, put the question inside the sentence: 한옥마을이 어디에 있어요? 'where is the Hanok Village?' becomes 한옥마을이 어디에 있는지 알아요? 'do you know where the Hanok Village is?' The question word stays (어디, 몇 시, 누구, 얼마나, 뭐), and the end of the inner question takes -지: a verb, 있다 or 없다 takes -는지 (가는지, 있는지; ㄹ drops: 열다 → 여는지); an adjective takes -(으)ㄴ지 with the same 받침 rule as A-(으)ㄴ N (좋은지, 비싼지; 멀다 → 먼지); a noun takes 인지 (어디인지, 누구인지, 얼마인지). Then add 알아요? or 몰라요 — and to a stranger, the polite 아세요? (알다 + -세요: the ㄹ drops). People often answer 잘 모르겠어요 'I'm not sure', a set phrase that sounds softer than 몰라요 (its -겠- comes in Lesson 8). For the past, put -았/었- in front of 는지: 어디에 갔는지 몰라요. A yes-or-no question works the same way: 오늘 문을 여는지 알아요? 'do you know if it's open today?'
