A-(으)ㄴ데도 · V-는데도 — even though … · … and it still didn't — when the result you expect does not come

Even though … · … and it still didn't — when the result you expect does not come. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 7: 껐다가 다시 켜 보세요 (Turn it off and on again — breakdowns and repairs).

What it means

-(으)ㄴ데도 / -는데도 means 'even though …': the first part happened or is true, but the result you would expect does not follow — 껐다가 다시 켰는데도 안 돼요 'I turned it off and on again, and it still doesn't work'. It is the background ending -(으)ㄴ데/-는데 from Lesson 2A-9 with 도 'even' added, so the forms are the same ones: adjectives take -(으)ㄴ데도 (작다 → 작은데도, 비싸다 → 비싼데도, 덥다 → 더운데도); verbs and 있다/없다 take -는데도 (청소하다 → 청소하는데도, 살다 → 사는데도, 있다 → 있는데도); for something that already happened, add -았/었는데도 (켰는데도, 갈았는데도, 비쌌는데도); a noun takes 인데도 (주말인데도). -지만 just puts two facts side by side; -는데도 is stronger and carries surprise or frustration: 매일 청소하는데도 먼지가 많아요. The second part is a statement or a question — not a request or a suggestion (비가 오는데도 가세요 ✗). At the start of a sentence, 그런데도 means 'even so'.
