이 · 그 · 저 + N — this · that · that over there + a noun — pointing at people and things

This · that · that over there + a noun — pointing at people and things. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1A, lesson 10: 친구하고 같이 놀아요 (Hanging out with friends — doing things together).

What it means

이, 그 and 저 go in front of a noun and point at it, with the same three distances as 이거 · 그거 · 저거 in Lesson 4 and 여기 · 거기 · 저기 in Lesson 6: 이 near me (the speaker), 그 near you (the listener), 저 far from both of us. In fact 이거 is just 이 + 거 'thing' — put any noun in place of 거: 이 책, 그 영화, 저 남자. They never stand alone and never change. As in Lesson 4, your 그 책 is the other person's 이 책. 그 has one more use: it points back to someone or something you have just talked about, even when it is not here — 어제 친구를 만났어요. — 그 친구는 누구예요? Do not mix up 저 + noun with 저 'I': 저는 학생이에요 (I) · 저 남자는 학생이에요 (that man).
