N하고 / N(이)랑 같이 — with — doing things together with someone

With — doing things together with someone. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1A, lesson 10: 친구하고 같이 놀아요 (Hanging out with friends — doing things together).

What it means

하고 after a person means 'with': 친구하고 같이 놀아요 = I hang out with a friend. 같이 'together' usually follows, but you can leave it out. In Lesson 4, 하고 joined two things ('and': 책하고 공책); now it links a person to what you do together. (이)랑 means the same and sounds more casual — friends use it with each other: 이랑 after a consonant (선생님이랑), 랑 after a vowel (친구랑, 유나 씨랑). 하고 never changes. The verb carries the tense: 친구하고 같이 놀았어요. To ask 'with whom?', say 누구하고 or 누구랑.
