돈 읽기 — reading prices — Sino-Korean numbers + 원, and asking how much
Reading prices — Sino-Korean numbers + 원, and asking how much. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1A, lesson 9: 이거 주세요, 얼마예요? (This one, please. How much is it? — shopping and counting).
What it means
Prices are read with the Sino-Korean numbers — the 일 · 이 · 삼 you used for dates and minutes — and 원. Build them from 십 (10), 백 (100), 천 (1,000) and 만 (10,000): 이십 = 20, 오백 = 500, 삼천오백 = 3,500. Never put 일 in front of 십, 백, 천 or 만: 천 원 and 만 원, not 일천 원. Korean groups numbers by four zeros, so 10,000 is one word, 만, and bigger prices are counted in 만: 12,000 = 만 이천, 35,000 = 삼만 오천, 50,000 = 오만. Read the 만 part first and pause a little after it. To ask the price say 얼마예요? — for one thing, N은/는 얼마예요? — and answer with the price + 이에요: 삼천오백 원이에요. 원 ends in a 받침, so it is always 이에요.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N 원 | under 10,000 — 십 · 백 · 천, no 일 in front | ₩100 → 백 원 |
| N만 원 | 10,000 and up — count in 만 | ₩10,000 → 만 원 |
| 얼마예요? | the price question — answer N 원이에요 | 물은 얼마예요? → 천 원이에요 |
