Where exactly — on, under, in, next to …. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1A, lesson 6: 어디에 가요? (Where are you going? — places and positions).
What it means
To say exactly where, put a position word between the place and 에: 책상 위에 'on the desk', 가방 안에 'in the bag', 은행 옆에 'next to the bank'. The place comes first, then the position: 책상 위, never 위 책상. Start with the place to say what is there: 책상 위에 책이 있어요. Start with the thing to say where it is: 책이 책상 위에 있어요. Either way the thing takes 이/가 before 있어요 · 없어요. To ask, put 어디 in the place slot: 책이 어디에 있어요? — 책상 위에 있어요.
