N 전에 · N 후에 — before and after — and telling the order of your day

Before and after — and telling the order of your day. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 7: 음악을 들으면서 밥을 먹어요 (Eating while listening to music — my daily routine).

What it means

전에 means 'before' and 후에 means 'after'. Put them after a noun — the same with or without 받침: 수업 전에 (before class), 식사 후에 (after the meal). After a length of time they count from now: 십 분 전에 (ten minutes ago), 한 시간 후에 (in an hour, an hour later). 전에 and 후에 never change; the verb at the end carries the time: 어제 수업 후에 도서관에 갔어요. A verb cannot take 전에 or 후에 directly; it needs its own form: -기 전에, from last class (먹기 전에), and -(으)ㄴ 후에, which comes next today (먹은 후에). So 식사 전에 = 밥을 먹기 전에, and 운동 후에 = 운동한 후에. To tell the steps of your day in order, use 먼저 (first), 그다음에 (next), 그리고 (and then) and 마지막으로 (finally).
