The formal style — statements and questions with -습니다 · -습니까?. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 8: 회사에서 일합니다 (I work at a company — formal speech).

What it means

-습니다 is the formal style. You hear it in meetings, presentations, job interviews and on the news, and when you meet someone formally for the first time; in everyday talk, -아요/어요 is still the normal polite style. After a consonant, add 습니다: 먹습니다, 있습니다. After a vowel, put ㅂ under the last syllable and add 니다: 가다 → 갑니다, 일하다 → 일합니다. A stem that ends in ㄹ drops the ㄹ first: 살다 → 삽니다. Questions end in -습니까? or -ㅂ니까?: 먹습니까? 갑니까? A noun takes 입니다 · 입니까?: 회사원입니다. For the past, put 았/었 before 습니다: 갔습니다, 먹었습니다, 했습니다. When you ask about someone you respect, add 시 as you did in -(으)세요: 하십니까? · 오십니다.
