V-(으)ㅂ시다 — formal suggestions — 'let's …'
Formal suggestions — 'let's …'. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 8: 회사에서 일합니다 (I work at a company — formal speech).
What it means
-(으)ㅂ시다 is a formal 'let's …'. The person running a meeting starts with it (회의를 시작합시다), and friends and colleagues use it to answer -(으)ㄹ까요?: 같이 갈까요? — 네, 갑시다. After a consonant, add 읍시다: 먹읍시다, 찾읍시다. After a vowel, put ㅂ under the last syllable and add 시다: 가다 → 갑시다, 하다 → 합시다. A stem that ends in ㄹ drops the ㄹ: 열다 → 엽시다. For 'let's not', use -지 맙시다: 늦지 맙시다. It speaks to the listener as an equal or a junior, so don't use it to your boss or your teacher; with them, ask with -(으)ㄹ까요? instead: 같이 가실까요?
