-(으)ㄹ 수 있다 · -(으)ㄹ 줄 알다 · 잘하다/못하다 — can, know how to, be good at — choosing the right one

Can, know how to, be good at — choosing the right one. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 10: 필기할 줄 알아요? (Can you take notes? — skills for the lecture hall).

What it means

Korean has three ways to talk about ability, and each answers a different question. -(으)ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다: have you learned how? — 운전할 줄 알아요, 한자를 읽을 줄 몰라요. -(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다: is it possible — because of time, place, the rules, your body or the situation? — 오늘은 바빠서 갈 수 없어요, 도서관에서는 전화할 수 없어요. 잘하다/못하다: how well? — 노래를 잘해요, 요리를 못해요, or 잘 + verb: 잘 못 써요. For a skill you have learned, 할 줄 알아요 and 할 수 있어요 often mean the same (수영할 줄 알아요 = 수영할 수 있어요), but plans, time and permission only take -(으)ㄹ 수 있다: 내일 만날 수 있어요?, never 만날 줄 알아요? 못해요 can mean 'can't' or 'am bad at'; 할 줄 몰라요 says clearly that you never learned. Native speakers often use two or three in a row: 수영할 줄 알아요. 그런데 잘 못해요. 그리고 오늘은 감기에 걸려서 수영할 수 없어요.
