V-는 중이다 · N 중이다 — in the middle of … — busy right now

In the middle of … — busy right now. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 9: 문의할 게 있는데요 (I have a question — calling to ask).

What it means

V-는 중이다 says you are in the middle of doing something right now — busy with it: 지금 밥을 먹는 중이에요 'I'm in the middle of eating'. The verb takes -는 as in Lesson 2, so a ㄹ stem drops its ㄹ: 만드는 중이에요. Nouns for activities take 중 directly: 회의 중 'in a meeting', 통화 중 'on the phone · the line is busy', 수업 중 'in class', 운전 중 'driving', 식사 중 'having a meal'. That short N 중 is what you see on doors, screens and texts: 회의 중, 상담 중. -는 중이다 is close to -고 있다 (1B-2), but it stresses 'busy right now', so it often comes with the reason you can't do something else: 운전하는 중이라서 전화를 받을 수 없어요. Use it for things people do, not for adjectives; with the weather, -고 있다 sounds natural (비가 오고 있어요). To be polite about someone else, say 중이세요: 이 교수님은 회의 중이세요. The tense goes on 이다 at the end: 아까 회의 중이었어요.
