V-는 동안(에) — while … — one thing happens during another
While … — one thing happens during another. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 11: 무거운 짐, 가벼운 짐 (Heavy load, light load — stretching your vocabulary).
What it means
-는 동안(에) means 'while …': one thing happens during the time that another is going on. Take 다 off the verb and add 는 동안 — 받침 does not matter: 자는 동안, 먹는 동안, 기다리는 동안. ㄹ verbs lose their ㄹ, just as in -는 N (Lesson 2A-2): 살다 → 사는 동안, 만들다 → 만드는 동안. 있다 and 없다 take 는 too: 제가 없는 동안. You can add 에 without changing the meaning: 자는 동안에. You know N 동안 from Lesson 2A-3 (방학 동안, 두 시간 동안) — 동안 is a noun, so a verb needs 는 in front of it. -았/었- never goes before -는 동안; the tense is on the last verb: 제가 자는 동안 택배가 왔어요. When the two halves have different people, mark the first one with 이/가: 우리가 짐을 나르는 동안 안나 씨는 커피를 사 왔어요. With -(으)면서 (Level 1B) one person does two things at once; with -는 동안 the people can be different.
