N마다 — every … · each … — 날마다 · 주말마다 · 두 시간마다 · 사람마다

Every … · each … — 날마다 · 주말마다 · 두 시간마다 · 사람마다. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 2: 운동을 좀 해 보는 게 어때요? (How about some exercise? — health and advice).

What it means

마다 is a particle meaning 'every' or 'each'. Put it straight after a noun; 받침 does not matter: 날마다 'every day', 아침마다 'every morning', 주말마다 'every weekend', 월요일마다 'every Monday'. With a number of hours or days it says how often something comes round again — 두 시간마다 'every two hours', 여덟 시간마다 'every eight hours' — which is how medicine is often taken. With people, countries and groups it means 'each one', and the sentence usually says that they differ or that each one has something: 사람마다 좋아하는 운동이 달라요, 층마다 휴게실이 있어요. Keep N에 from Level 1B to count how many times in a period — 하루에 세 번, 일주일에 두 번 — and use 마다 to say how long until the next time. 매일, 매주, 매달 and 매년 already mean 'every …', so they never take 마다: 날마다 = 매일.
