V-는 게 어때요? — how about …ing? · why don't you …? — soft advice and suggestions

How about …ing? · why don't you …? — soft advice and suggestions. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 2: 운동을 좀 해 보는 게 어때요? (How about some exercise? — health and advice).

What it means

V-는 게 어때요? means 'how about …ing?' or 'why don't you …?'. It gives advice or makes a suggestion by asking what the other person thinks, so it sounds friendly rather than bossy. 게 is short for 것이: it is the V-는 것 'doing …' from Level 2A plus 어때요? 'how is it?'. Take 다 off and add 는 게 어때요? — 받침 does not matter: 쉬는 게 어때요?, 먹는 게 어때요?. ㄹ verbs drop the ㄹ, just as in V-는 N: 살다 → 사는 게, 만들다 → 만드는 게. The most common advice uses -아/어 보다 'try': 병원에 가 보는 게 어때요?, 운동을 좀 해 보는 게 어때요? — 좀 makes it softer still. To an older person or your boss, add -시-: 가 보시는 게 어때요? To advise someone not to do something, use -지 않는 게 어때요?: 밤에는 커피를 마시지 않는 게 어때요? -았/었- cannot go in front, because advice is about now or later. Answer with 좋아요, 좋은 생각이에요 or 한번 해 볼게요.
