A-아/어 보이다 — look …, seem … — saying how something looks to you

Look …, seem … — saying how something looks to you. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 3: 저는 좀 조용한 편이에요 (I'm the quiet type — looks and personality).

What it means

-아/어 보이다 says how something looks to you: 'look …, seem …'. Add it to an adjective: after ㅏ or ㅗ use 아 보이다 (좋다 → 좋아 보여요, 작다 → 작아 보여요); after other vowels use 어 보이다 (맛있다 → 맛있어 보여요, 젊다 → 젊어 보여요); 하다 becomes 해 보이다 (피곤하다 → 피곤해 보여요). The changes are the ones of -아요/어요, so take the 요 form and swap 요 for 보여요: 커요 → 커 보여요, 바빠요 → 바빠 보여요, 어려요 → 어려 보여요, 귀여워요 → 귀여워 보여요, 게을러요 → 게을러 보여요. It is a guess from what you see — a face, a photo, food on the table: 오늘 기분이 좋아 보여요, 이 떡볶이가 매워 보여요. For the past, put -았/었- on 보이다: 어제 민수 씨가 피곤해 보였어요. For older people add -(으)시-: 할아버지가 건강해 보이세요. Do not mix it up with -아/어 보세요 'try …' (Level 1B), which goes on verbs: 입어 보세요 'try it on', but 커 보여요 'it looks big'.
