A-(으)ㄴ 편이다 · V-는 편이다 — rather …, on the … side — describing yourself and others softly

Rather …, on the … side — describing yourself and others softly. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 3: 저는 좀 조용한 편이에요 (I'm the quiet type — looks and personality).

What it means

-(으)ㄴ 편이다 / -는 편이다 says that something is true 'on the whole, rather, more … than not' — compared with other people or with what is usual. It is softer and more modest than a plain sentence: 저는 조용해요 sounds like a hard fact, while 저는 좀 조용한 편이에요 'I'm on the quiet side' is how Koreans usually talk about themselves. Adjectives use the A-(으)ㄴ N form you know from Level 1B: 작은 편이에요, 큰 편이에요, 조용한 편이에요; ㄹ words drop the ㄹ (길다 → 긴 편이에요), ㅂ words change to 운 (귀엽다 → 귀여운 편이에요), and words with 있다/없다 take 는 (재미있는 편이에요). Verbs use the V-는 N form from Level 2A: 일찍 일어나는 편이에요, 매운 음식을 잘 먹는 편이에요; ㄹ verbs drop the ㄹ (만들다 → 만드는 편이에요). Verbs usually come with 잘, 자주, 많이 or 일찍. For the past, put -았/었- on 이다: 어릴 때는 조용한 편이었어요. For one finished event, use V-(으)ㄴ 편이에요: 오늘은 많이 먹은 편이에요.
