V-아다/어다 주다 — go and get … for someone · take someone somewhere — two steps, one favour

Go and get … for someone · take someone somewhere — two steps, one favour. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 9: 하마터면 늦을 뻔했어요 (I nearly missed it — first day at work).

What it means

-아다/어다 주다 is a favour in two steps and two places: you do something in one place — buy, find, borrow, pick up — and then bring the thing, or take the person, to someone or somewhere else. 1층에서 커피 좀 사다 주시겠어요? = go to the first floor, buy a coffee and bring it to me. The vowel rule is the one you know from -아요/어요: after ㅏ or ㅗ add 아다 (사다 → 사다, 찾다 → 찾아다, 받다 → 받아다), after other vowels add 어다 (가지다 → 가져다, 데리다 → 데려다, 빌리다 → 빌려다); 줍다 becomes 주워다. Three are used all the time: 가져다 주다 (bring a thing — in speech often 갖다 주다), 데려다 주다 (take a person somewhere: 집까지 데려다 줄게요 = I'll see you home) and 사다 주다. Compare -아/어 주다 (Level 1B): 친구에게 커피를 사 줬어요 = I paid for my friend's coffee · 친구에게 커피를 사다 줬어요 = I went, bought one and brought it to my friend. For someone older or higher, use 드리다, and 모시다 instead of 데리다: 할아버지를 집까지 모셔다 드렸어요. To ask politely, add the ending from Lesson 2B-8: 사다 주시겠어요?
