A/V-(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다 · -(으)ㄴ/는 줄 알았다 — I never expected … · I thought …, but … — surprises and mistaken beliefs

I never expected … · I thought …, but … — surprises and mistaken beliefs. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 3: 비가 이렇게 올 줄 몰랐어요 (I didn't know it would rain this much — weather and surprise).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다 means 'I didn't know (expect) that … would …': something happened that you never imagined, so it is the natural way to show surprise — 비가 이렇게 많이 올 줄 몰랐어요. -(으)ㄴ/는 줄 알았다 means 'I thought that …', and almost always that you were wrong: 오늘 수업이 없는 줄 알았어요 (I thought there was no class today — but there was). 줄 is a noun here, so the word in front takes a modifier: -(으)ㄹ 줄 for something still to come (올 줄, 많을 줄), -는 줄 for verbs happening now (하는 줄, 없는 줄), -(으)ㄴ 줄 for verbs that have already happened and for adjectives (그친 줄, 괜찮은 줄), and 인 줄 for nouns (휴가인 줄). The other two combinations work too: -(으)ㄹ 줄 알았다 is 'I knew it would …' (비가 올 줄 알았어요 — 그래서 우산을 가져왔어요), and -(으)ㄴ/는 줄 몰랐다 is 'I didn't know that …' (마크 씨가 아픈 줄 몰랐어요). Don't mix it up with -(으)ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 (Lesson 2A-10), 'know how to': 수영할 줄 알아요 is a skill; 비가 올 줄 몰랐어요 is a surprise. A clue: today's grammar is nearly always in the past — 알았어요, 몰랐어요. 알고 also links to the next sentence: 축제를 하는 줄 알고 한강에 갔어요 (thinking the festival was on, I went to the river).
