V-아/어 보니(까) — I tried it and found … — what you find out by doing

I tried it and found … — what you find out by doing. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 4: 먹어 보니까 맛있던데요 (I tried it and it was good — tasting and recalling).

What it means

-아/어 보니(까) tells what you found out by doing something. The first half is what you did, usually 'tried' — the 보다 of -아/어 보다 (Lesson 1B-10) — and the second half is what you discovered when you did it: 먹어 보니까 맛있었어요 = I tried it, and (I found that) it was good. Make the first half like the -아요/어요 form without 요: ㅏ or ㅗ → 아 보니까 (가 보니까, 살아 보니까), everything else → 어 보니까 (먹어 보니까, 만들어 보니까, 마셔 보니까), and 하다 → 해 보니까. The person who tries is usually you. The second half is a fact you found, usually in the past (맛있었어요, 사람이 많았어요), or in the present when it is still true (한국에서 살아 보니까 혼자 밥을 먹는 사람이 많아요); it never ends in a request or a suggestion. With 가다 and 오다 it tells what you found when you got there: 시장에 가 보니까 사람이 정말 많았어요. Don't mix it up with -(으)니까 'because' (Lesson 2A-5): 맛있으니까 먹어 보세요 gives a reason, 먹어 보니까 맛있었어요 tells a discovery. 보니 without 까 means the same and is common in writing.
