V-지 그래(요)? — why don't you …? — friendly advice

Why don't you …? — friendly advice. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 5: 입어 보고 살걸 그랬어요 (I should have tried it on — regrets and hesitation).

What it means

V-지 그래요? gives friendly advice: 'why don't you …?' It comes from 그렇게 하다 — literally 'why don't you do it like that?' — and sounds like a friend who cares. 받침 does not matter: take 다 off and add 지 그래요?: 교환하지 그래요?, 먹지 그래요?, 쉬지 그래요?. With a close friend drop 요 — 교환하지 그래? It is closer and warmer than -는 게 어때요? (Lesson 2B-2), so keep it for friends, classmates and people younger than you; to a teacher or a boss it can sound like you are telling them what to do, and -(으)시는 게 어떠세요? is safer. -았/었- cannot go before -지, because advice is about now or later. About something already over, change 그래요 to 그랬어요: 미리 물어보지 그랬어요? 'why didn't you ask first?' — a soft complaint: the other person's 'should have', just as -(으)ㄹ걸 그랬어요 is yours.
