아무 N도 — no … at all · nobody, nothing, nowhere — 아무 with a negative (and 아무 N(이)나: any … at all)

No … at all · nobody, nothing, nowhere — 아무 with a negative (and 아무 N(이)나: any … at all). Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 6: 일요일에는 아무 약속도 없어요 (No plans at all on Sunday — places, plans and things that just happen).

What it means

아무 means 'any', and it almost always comes with a particle. 아무 + noun + 도 goes with a negative — 안, 못, 없다, 모르다 — and means 'no … at all, not a single …': 아무 약속도 없어요 (I have no plans at all), 아무 말도 안 했어요 (I didn't say a word). Three are special and you use them every day: for people just 아무도 (not 아무 누구도), for things 아무것도, for places 아무 데도 — 아무도 안 왔어요, 아무것도 안 먹었어요, 아무 데도 안 가요. Other particles go in front of 도: 아무한테도 (to nobody), 아무 데서도 (nowhere — at no place), 아무하고도 (with nobody). Put (이)나 in place of 도 and use a positive ending, and the meaning turns into 'any … at all, it doesn't matter which': 아무나 (anyone), 아무거나 (anything — 아무것이나 said short), 아무 데나 (anywhere), 아무 때나 (any time), 아무 음식이나 (이나 after a 받침). You met 아무나 next to 누구나 in Lesson 3A-2: 누구나 is 'everyone', 아무나 is 'anyone, whoever'. The tense goes on the verb at the end: 아무도 안 왔어요, 아무 연락도 없었어요.
