V-(으)ㄹ 생각 · 계획 · 예정이다 — I'm thinking of … · I plan to … · … is scheduled — talking about the future

I'm thinking of … · I plan to … · … is scheduled — talking about the future. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 1: 결혼하려면 아직 멀었어요 (Marriage is a long way off — love, plans and the future).

What it means

These three expressions all put -(으)ㄹ, the future modifier (Lesson 2A-3), in front of a noun — 생각 'thought', 계획 'plan', 예정 'schedule' — and end with 이다: 갈 생각이에요, 갈 계획이에요, 갈 예정이에요. They differ in how fixed the future is. -(으)ㄹ 생각이다 is an intention, what you have in mind: 졸업하고 대학원에 진학할 생각이에요 'I'm thinking of going on to graduate school'. -(으)ㄹ 계획이다 is a plan with some steps worked out: 내년에 한국 회사에 취직할 계획이에요. -(으)ㄹ 예정이다 means the date is fixed — it is scheduled — and it is common in notices, timetables and invitations, often with -ㅂ니다: 결혼식은 11월 13일에 할 예정입니다. After a 받침 add 을 (받을 생각), after a vowel ㄹ (갈 계획); a stem that ends in ㄹ keeps one ㄹ (살 예정), and 듣다 becomes 들을 계획. For 'not going to', use -지 않을 생각이에요. To ask, 언제 결혼할 생각이에요? The past goes on 이다: 여행 갈 생각이었어요 'I meant to travel (but …)'. Compare -(으)ㄹ까 하다 (Lesson 2B-6), a looser 'I might …'.
