얼마나 A-(으)ㄴ지 · V-는지 모르다 — you can't imagine how … — saying 'so very …!' with feeling

You can't imagine how … — saying 'so very …!' with feeling. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 3: 운동을 했더니 몸이 좋아졌어요 (I exercised and now I feel better — body and results).

What it means

얼마나 A-(으)ㄴ지/V-는지 몰라요 is a favourite way to say 'so very …' with feeling: 마라톤이 얼마나 힘든지 몰라요 'you can't imagine how hard a marathon is!'. It looks like the 'I don't know where/whether …' pattern from Lesson 2A-7, but it is not a real question — the speaker knows very well and is saying it is more than you could imagine. Adjectives take -(으)ㄴ지: 좋은지, 많은지, and after a vowel ㄴ지: 피곤한지, 예쁜지; ㄹ drops (힘들다 → 힘든지) and ㅂ becomes 운 (가볍다 → 가벼운지). Verbs, and words ending in 있다/없다, take -는지: 얼마나 잘하는지, 얼마나 맛있는지, 얼마나 재미있는지. For something in the past, use -았/었는지 with either kind: 얼마나 아팠는지 몰라요 'you can't imagine how much it hurt'. It works for good and bad feelings alike — praise, thanks and complaints: 얼마나 고마운지 몰라요. Three tips: say it warmly, with the stress on 얼마나; keep 몰라요 in the present even for the past (몰랐어요 would sound like 'I really didn't know'); and in quick speech people often shorten it to 얼마나 힘든데요! (Lesson 2A-9 -(으)ㄴ데요).
