V-고 있다 (착용) —검은 정장을 입고 있는 사람이 민수 씨예요 — wearing · carrying — what someone has on right now

Wearing · carrying — what someone has on right now. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 4: 입고 있는 양복이 잘 어울려요 (That suit looks good on you — gatherings and dress).

What it means

With clothes and accessories, -고 있다 describes what someone has on: 민수 씨는 검은 정장을 입고 있어요 'Minsu is wearing a black suit'. It is the same -고 있다 as in Lesson 1B-2, and 옷을 입고 있어요 can still mean 'I'm getting dressed' — but most of the time it means the state, as if you were describing a photo. Korean uses a different verb for each kind of thing: 입다 for clothes (셔츠, 정장, 코트), 쓰다 for things on your head or face (모자, 안경, 선글라스), 신다 for things on your feet (구두, 부츠, 양말), 끼다 for rings and gloves, 매다 for ties and belts, 차다 for a watch, 하다 for accessories, necklaces and scarves, and 들다 for what you hold in your hand (메다 if a bag is on your shoulder). Taking things off is mostly 벗다 (옷 · 모자 · 신발 · 장갑), but a ring is 빼다 and a tie or a watch is 풀다. To pick someone out, use the -는 N form of Lesson 2A-2: 빨간 넥타이를 매고 있는 사람 'the person wearing a red tie'. For what someone had on, use -고 있었어요; for someone older, -고 계세요. Don't use -아/어 있다 (Lesson 2B-9) for wearing: 입어 있어요 ✗.
