N보고 —유나 씨가 저보고 사회를 보라고 했어요 — (said) to me · told me to … — passing on what someone said to you

(said) to me · told me to … — passing on what someone said to you. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 4: 입고 있는 양복이 잘 어울려요 (That suit looks good on you — gatherings and dress).

What it means

N보고 marks the person someone was speaking to when you pass on their words: 유나 씨가 저보고 사회를 보라고 했어요 'Yuna told me to be the MC'. Here it means the same as N한테 (Lesson 1B-9) — it comes from 보다, as if 'looking at me, she said …' — but it belongs to everyday speech; in writing or a formal report use N한테 or N에게. 받침 makes no difference: 저보고, 민수 씨보고, 동생보고. It goes with all the reported speech of Level 3A — -(으)라고 하다 (orders and requests), -냐고 하다 (questions), -다고 하다 (statements) and -자고 하다 (suggestions) — and also with 그러다 'to say so' and the question 뭐래요? 'what did they say?': 선생님이 안나 씨보고 뭐래요? It is only for saying and asking: 친구한테 선물을 줬어요, never 친구보고 선물을 줬어요. Because it sounds casual, don't use it when the listener was someone above you: say 할아버지께 말씀을 드렸어요, not 할아버지보고 말했어요. N보고 is a particle, so the verb after it can be in any tense: 저보고 오라고 했어요 · 저보고 하라고 할 거예요.
