A/V-(으)ㄹ 따름이다 · -(으)ㄹ 뿐이다 — only … · nothing more than … — modest words for speeches, thanks and replies to praise

Only … · nothing more than … — modest words for speeches, thanks and replies to praise. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 11: 행복이란 무엇일까요 (What is happiness? — defining, conceding and saying what you think).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ 따름이다 means 'it is only …, nothing more': 와 주셔서 감사할 따름입니다 'I can only thank you for coming'. It is a formal, modest ending — at home in speeches, interviews, award acceptances and thank-you messages, nearly always in the -ㅂ니다 form. Use -을 따름이다 after a 받침 (믿을 따름입니다) and -ㄹ 따름이다 after a vowel or ㄹ (감사할 따름입니다); ㅂ-irregular adjectives change as usual (놀랍다 → 놀라울 따름입니다, 고맙다 → 고마울 따름입니다). -(으)ㄹ 뿐이다 has the same meaning and is used in everyday conversation as well: 조금 피곤할 뿐이에요 'I'm just a bit tired'. With a noun, say N일 뿐이다 — 그냥 친구일 뿐이에요 'he's just a friend' — which is different from N뿐이다 (Lesson 3A-5), 'there is only N'. With -았/었- in front, it plays down something you did: 저는 제 일을 했을 따름입니다 'I only did my job' — the classic reply to praise. Keep 따름 for formal moments: among friends it can sound stiff, or playfully grand.
