A-(으)ㄴ 반면(에) · V-는 반면(에) — while … · on the other hand — two sides of one thing, two people, two months
While … · on the other hand — two sides of one thing, two people, two months. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 5: 저축은커녕 생활비도 모자라요 (Saving? I can barely cover living costs — money and spending).
What it means
-(으)ㄴ/는 반면(에) puts two contrasting facts side by side: 이 가게는 값이 싼 반면에 품질이 좀 낮아요 'this shop is cheap; on the other hand, the quality is a bit low'. It can contrast two sides of one thing (cheap ↔ low quality), two people (저는 돈을 모으는 반면에 동생은 잘 써요 'I save, while my younger brother spends') or two figures (지난달에 비해 식비는 줄어든 반면에 가스 요금은 늘었어요). After an adjective use -(으)ㄴ 반면에 (싼, 많은); after a verb, -는 반면에 for something that is true now or usually (모으는, and 버는 — the ㄹ of 벌다 drops) and -(으)ㄴ 반면에 for something that has happened (줄어든, 늘어난); after a noun, N인 반면에 (고정비인 반면에). 있다 and 없다 take -는: 있는 반면에, 없는 반면에. -았/었- does not go straight in front of 반면에 (줄었는 반면에 ✗); the tense of the whole sentence goes at the very end. The meaning is close to -지만, but 반면에 is more formal and more balanced, which makes it the classic link in presentations, reports and TOPIK II writing (question 53, describing a graph), where it often follows N에 비해 (Lesson 4A-2). 에 can be dropped: 싼 반면 품질이 낮다. It needs a real contrast — don't use it for 'and then' or for background (that is -고 or -는데).
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A-(으)ㄴ 반면(에) | 형용사 — 받침 O 은 · 받침 X ㄴ | 많다 + 은 반면에 → 많은 반면에 |
| V-는 반면(에) | 동사 · 있다 · 없다 — 받침과 상관없이 는 · 지난 일은 -(으)ㄴ | 모으다 + 는 반면에 → 모으는 반면에 |
| N인 반면(에) | 명사 + 이다 | 고정비 + 인 반면에 → 고정비인 반면에 |
Key points
- A-(으)ㄴ 반면(에) · V-는 반면(에) · N인 반면에 = while … · on the other hand: two contrasting sides set next to each other — 싼 반면에 품질이 낮아요. Close to -지만 (Lesson 1A) but more formal and balanced: the usual link in presentations, reports and TOPIK II writing. 에 can be dropped: 싼 반면.
- A past action takes V-(으)ㄴ 반면에 (줄어든 반면에 · 늘어난 반면에); -았/었- never goes straight before it. 있다 · 없다 take -는 (있는 반면에). It needs a real contrast — not just 'and then'.
Examples
