A/V-(으)ㄹ 게 뻔하다 — it's obvious that … · … is bound to happen — predicting what anyone can see coming

It's obvious that … · … is bound to happen — predicting what anyone can see coming. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 5: 저축은커녕 생활비도 모자라요 (Saving? I can barely cover living costs — money and spending).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ 게 뻔하다 predicts a result that anyone can see coming: 이렇게 쓰면 다음 달에도 돈이 모자랄 게 뻔해요 'if I keep spending like this, I'm bound to run short next month too'. 게 is short for 것이 and 뻔하다 means 'plain to see', so word for word it says 'that it will … is obvious'. After a 받침 use -을 게 뻔하다 (늦을, 많을; 춥다 → 추울); after a vowel or ㄹ, -ㄹ 게 뻔하다 (모자랄, 후회할, and 놀다 → 놀 — the ㄹ stays single); a noun takes -일 게 뻔하다 (적자일 게 뻔해요). For something that has surely already happened, put -았/었- inside: 민수 씨는 벌써 월급을 다 썼을 게 뻔해요 'Minsu has obviously spent his whole salary already'. Put the past at the end to say what was obvious back then: 그렇게 쓰면 돈이 모자랄 게 뻔했어요. It is much surer than -(으)ㄹ 거예요 (Lesson 2A-5), and it is used mostly for bad or annoying results: about yourself it sounds like self-mockery, about other people it can sound critical, so take care with someone older. Don't confuse it with -(으)ㄹ 뻔했다 (Lesson 2B-9), which has no 게, is nearly always past and means 'almost': 늦을 뻔했어요 'I was nearly late (but I wasn't)' — 늦을 게 뻔해요 'I'm sure to be late'.
