A/V-고 해서 — … and so on, so … — one reason among several

… and so on, so … — one reason among several. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 6: 그때는 그랬지 (That's how it was then — memories, proverbs and the way things go).

What it means

-고 해서 gives a reason while hinting that it is not the only one: 주말이고 해서 유나네 집에 놀러 갔어요 'It was the weekend, among other things, so I went round to Yuna's'. It is made of -고 'and' plus 해서 'so', as if the sentence were 'it was the weekend and (this and that), so …'. Add -고 해서 straight to a verb or adjective stem whatever the 받침 (바쁘고 해서, 비도 오고 해서); after a noun use 이고 해서, or 고 해서 after a vowel (주말이고 해서, 장남이고 해서). It very often comes with 도 'also' on the noun, which makes the 'one of several' feeling stronger: 날씨도 좋고 해서, and two reasons can be lined up: 비도 오고 춥고 해서. For a reason that has already happened, use -았/었고 해서: 일도 다 끝났고 해서 일찍 퇴근했어요. Because it stays a little vague, -고 해서 sounds softer than -아/어서, so Koreans use it to decline or to excuse themselves without going into details — you can even stop at -고 해서요: 미안해요. 오늘은 좀 피곤하고 해서요. Unlike -아/어서, it can also lead into a suggestion: 날씨도 좋고 해서 같이 산책할까요?
