A/V-기 마련이다 — … is bound to … · that's how it goes — the way things usually are
… is bound to … · that's how it goes — the way things usually are. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 6: 그때는 그랬지 (That's how it was then — memories, proverbs and the way things go).
What it means
-기 마련이다 says that something is the natural, expected way of things — true for anyone, at any time: 처음에는 누구나 실수하기 마련이에요 'everyone makes mistakes at first; that's how it goes'. 마련 is a noun meaning roughly 'what is bound to be', so the sentence literally says 'making mistakes is what is bound to happen'. Add -기 마련이다 to any verb or adjective stem, whatever the 받침: 헤어지기 마련이에요, 그립기 마련이에요, 시간이 걸리기 마련이에요. -게 마련이다 means exactly the same (잊게 마련이에요). Because it describes a general rule, -았/었- cannot go before 기 (갔기 마련이다 ✗), and it is not used for a single event, a plan or a forecast: for tomorrow's weather say 내일 비가 올 거예요, not 오기 마련이에요. Compare -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 (Lessons 3B-9 and 4A-5), which says a particular situation leaves no other option (연습을 안 했으니까 실수할 수밖에 없어요). -기 마련이다 is very often used to comfort someone — 괜찮아요, 처음에는 누구나 그렇기 마련이에요 — but since it states a general truth, saying it to someone older, or to someone who simply wants sympathy, can sound like a lecture.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A/V-기 마련이다 | 형용사 · 동사 — 받침과 상관없이 기 마련이다 (= -게 마련이다) | 실수하다 + 기 마련이다 → 실수하기 마련이에요 |
Key points
- -기 마련이다 = it's only natural that … · … is bound to happen: a rule of life, not one event. 받침 doesn't matter: 실수하기 마련이에요 · 그립기 마련이에요. -게 마련이다 means the same: 잊게 마련이에요.
- No -았/었- before 기 (갔기 마련이다 ✗), and not for plans or one-off guesses (→ -(으)ㄹ 거예요). It is kind as comfort, but to someone older it can sound like a lecture.
Examples
