A-다 싶다 · V-ㄴ/는다 싶다 · -(으)ㄹ까 싶다 — it struck me that … · I half think … · I'm thinking I might … — judgements you make to yourself

It struck me that … · I half think … · I'm thinking I might … — judgements you make to yourself. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 7: 만남과 헤어짐 (Meeting and parting — what used to be, what I half think).

What it means

-다 싶다 reports a judgement that went through your mind — 'it struck me that …', 'I felt that …' — rather than a guess you offer to someone (that is -(으)ㄴ 것 같다, Lesson 2A-4). The clause before 싶다 is in the plain written style of Lesson 2B-7: adjectives take 다 (춥다 싶어서, 많다 싶었는데), verbs take ㄴ다 after a vowel or ㄹ (온다, 운다) and 는다 after a 받침 (먹는다), and anything already finished takes -았/었다 (떨어졌다 싶었어요 'I felt sure I had failed', 잘했다 싶어요 'I think it was the right thing to do'). It is very often followed by what you did about it — -다 싶어서 … (좀 춥다 싶어서 코트를 입었어요) — or by a surprise — -다 싶었는데 … (다 끝났다 싶었는데 문제가 하나 더 있었어요). -(으)ㄹ까 싶다 is its partner for the future: like -(으)ㄹ까 하다 (Lesson 2B-6) it gives a plan you haven't quite made yet (주말에는 집에서 쉴까 싶어요), and with -어서 it can carry a small worry or hope (혹시 연락이 올까 싶어서 휴대폰만 봐요 'in case they call'). All of these sound a little like talking to yourself, which makes them gentle and modest. Lesson 4B-11 adds two more of the family, -나 싶다 and -(으)ㄴ가 싶다.
