V-는 사이에 · N 사이에 — while … (in that short gap) · before you knew it — something happening unnoticed

While … (in that short gap) · before you knew it — something happening unnoticed. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 7: 만남과 헤어짐 (Meeting and parting — what used to be, what I half think).

What it means

-는 사이에 marks a short gap of time — while you are busy, asleep or away — in which something else happens, often without you noticing: 제가 잠깐 자는 사이에 동생이 머리를 자르고 왔어요 'while I was having a quick nap, my brother went and got his hair cut'. Add 는 사이에 to any verb stem, with or without 받침: 자는 사이에, 먹는 사이에, 이야기하는 사이에. With verbs of going and coming — 가다, 나가다, 오다 — Koreans also say -(으)ㄴ 사이에, which means 'while someone was away': 동생이 계산하러 간 사이에 엄마가 몰래 우셨어요. After a noun, just add 사이에: 잠깐 사이에 'in a moment', 그 사이에 'in the meantime', 1년 사이에 'within a year'. A very common set phrase is 모르는 사이에 'before you know it': 모르는 사이에 2년이 다 되어 가요. Compare -는 동안 (Lesson 2B-11), which covers the whole period from start to finish (동생이 군대에 있는 동안 'all the time my brother is in the army'); -는 사이에 picks out a short stretch inside it, so it suits surprises and things done secretly. The tense goes at the end of the sentence, never before 사이에 (잤는 사이에 ✗).
