V-(으)ㄹ까요? — shall we …? — suggesting a plan and a time
Shall we …? — suggesting a plan and a time. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1A, lesson 8: 몇 시에 만날까요? (What time shall we meet? — telling the time and making a suggestion).
What it means
-(으)ㄹ까요? turns a verb into a suggestion: 'shall we …?'. Take 다 off the verb and look at the last syllable. With 받침, add 을까요? (먹다 → 먹을까요?); without 받침, ㄹ goes under the last syllable and 까요? follows (보다 → 볼까요?, 공부하다 → 공부할까요?). Start with 우리 to make it clear that you mean both of you, and let your voice go up at the end. To say yes, answer 네, 그래요 or repeat the verb: 네, 봐요. You fix the details with the same ending: 몇 시에 만날까요? 어디에서 만날까요?
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -을까요? | 받침 O | 먹다 + 을까요? → 먹을까요? |
| -ㄹ까요? | 받침 X | 만나다 + ㄹ까요? → 만날까요? |
Key points
- V-(으)ㄹ까요? — 'shall we …?': suggesting something to do together
- 을까요? after a 받침 (먹을까요?) · ㄹ까요? after a vowel (볼까요?) — answer 네, 그래요.
