시간 읽기 — telling the time — hours, minutes and 'at' a time
Telling the time — hours, minutes and 'at' a time. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1A, lesson 8: 몇 시에 만날까요? (What time shall we meet? — telling the time and making a suggestion).
What it means
Korean tells the time with two different sets of numbers. Hours take the Korean numbers, and 하나 · 둘 · 셋 · 넷 get shorter before 시: 한 시, 두 시, 세 시, 네 시, then 다섯 시 … 열 시, 열한 시, 열두 시. Minutes take the numbers you used for dates in Lesson 7 (일 · 이 · 삼 …): 십 분, 이십 분, 사십오 분. Say the hour first and the minutes after it: 세 시 십 분 = 3:10. For half past, say 삼십 분. To say at what time something happens, add 에 to the time, just like 토요일에: 두 시에 만나요. With a day as well, 에 comes only once, at the end: 토요일 두 시에. Ask with 몇: 몇 시예요? 'What time is it?' · 몇 시에 …? 'At what time …?'
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N시 | hours · Korean numbers, shortened | 하나 + 시 → 한 시 |
| N분 | minutes · the date numbers | 십 + 분 → 십 분 |
| N시에 | at a time · + 에 | 세 시 + 에 → 세 시에 |
