A/V-네요 · N이네요 — oh, …! — reacting to something you have just noticed
Oh, …! — reacting to something you have just noticed. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1A, lesson 8: 몇 시에 만날까요? (What time shall we meet? — telling the time and making a suggestion).
What it means
-네요 is what you say when you have just noticed something — you see it, hear it or find it out right now: 'oh, …!'. It goes straight onto the stem of a verb or an adjective, with no 받침 check: 있다 → 있네요, 늦다 → 늦네요, 가깝다 → 가깝네요. After a noun, use 이네요 with 받침 and 네요 without: 생일이네요, 파티네요, 세 시네요. For something that has already happened, put -았/었- first: 늦었네요 'you're late!'. It is for news to you, so it is not the way to answer a simple question about yourself.
Forms
