V-(으)러 가다/오다 — going somewhere to do something — the reason for going

Going somewhere to do something — the reason for going. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 3: 공부하러 도서관에 가요 (Going to the library to study — plans and purposes).

What it means

-(으)러 가다/오다 says why you go or come somewhere: 공부하러 도서관에 가요, 'I'm going to the library to study'. After a consonant, add 으러: 먹으러, 찾으러. After a vowel, add 러: 보러, 공부하러. A stem that ends in ㄹ just adds 러: 놀러 가요. ㄷ verbs change ㄷ to ㄹ: 듣다 → 들으러. The verb after it is 가다 or 오다, and the place takes 에. Both orders are fine: 공부하러 도서관에 가요 · 도서관에 공부하러 가요. -(으)러 never changes for time; the time goes on 가다 or 오다 at the end: 먹으러 갔어요, 먹으러 갈 거예요.
