V-(으)ㄹ게요 — promises and offers — 'I will …', said to the person in front of you

Promises and offers — 'I will …', said to the person in front of you. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 3: 공부하러 도서관에 가요 (Going to the library to study — plans and purposes).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ게요 is 'I will …', said as a promise or an offer to the person you are talking to: 제가 할게요, 'I'll do it'. After a consonant, add 을게요: 찾을게요, 먹을게요. After a vowel, add ㄹ게요: 갈게요, 할게요. A stem that ends in ㄹ just adds 게요: 놀게요. It is written 게 but pronounced 께: 갈게요 [갈께요]. The person who acts is always 'I' or 'we', so do not use it for other people or in questions. -(으)ㄹ 거예요 tells a plan, yours or anyone's; -(으)ㄹ게요 decides something now, often as an answer to what the other person has just said: 같이 가요! — 네, 갈게요.
