A/V-아서/어서 — reasons — '…, so …' · 'because …'
Reasons — '…, so …' · 'because …'. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 4: 왜 늦었어요? (Why were you late? — giving reasons).
What it means
-아서/어서 joins a reason to what happens because of it. Two sentences with 그래서 become one: 버스가 안 왔어요. 그래서 늦었어요. → 버스가 안 와서 늦었어요. The easy way to make it: take the -아요/어요 form and change 요 to 서 — 와요 → 와서, 먹어요 → 먹어서, 공부해요 → 공부해서, 시끄러워요 → 시끄러워서. After a noun, add 이라서 (with 받침) or 라서 (without): 시험이라서, 친구라서. To answer 왜?, you can stop after the reason and add 요: 아침에 못 일어나서요. Two rules: -았/었- never goes before -아서/어서, because the last verb carries the time, and the second part cannot ask or suggest — no -(으)세요 or -(으)ㄹ까요 after this -아서/어서.
