V-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다 — can · can't — what you are able to do

Can · can't — what you are able to do. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 6: 피아노를 칠 수 있어요? (Can you play the piano? — abilities).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ 수 있어요 means 'can': a skill (피아노를 칠 수 있어요) or what is possible in a situation (토요일에 갈 수 있어요). After 받침 add 을 수 있어요 (먹을 수 있어요); after a vowel, ㄹ goes under the last syllable (치다 → 칠 수 있어요); a stem that already ends in ㄹ just adds 수 있어요 (만들 수 있어요). For 'can't', use 없어요: 스키를 탈 수 없어요. ㄷ words change as in 1A: 들을 수 있어요. The tense goes on 있다 · 없다: 할 수 있었어요.
