V-지 못하다 — can't — a second way: -지 못해요

Can't — a second way: -지 못해요. Korean grammar for beginner learners — Level 1B, lesson 6: 피아노를 칠 수 있어요? (Can you play the piano? — abilities).

What it means

-지 못해요 says you can't do something — because you don't have the skill (스키를 타지 못해요) or because something stops you (다리가 아파서 축구를 하지 못해요). Take 다 off and add 지 못해요; nothing changes with or without 받침, and ㄷ and ㄹ words keep their stem: 듣지 못해요, 만들지 못해요. It means the same as 못 from Lesson 2: 못 가요 = 가지 못해요. With 하다 verbs, 못 goes just before 하다 (수영 못 해요), but 지 못해요 follows the whole verb (수영하지 못해요). -지 못해요 sounds a little more careful and is common in writing; in everyday talk 못 V is used more. The past goes on 하다 at the end: 가지 못했어요.
