N 동안 — for … — how long something lasts
For … — how long something lasts. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 3: 콘서트에 가 봤어요? (Have you been to a concert? — experiences and plans).
What it means
동안 after a time word tells how long something lasts: 두 시간 동안 'for two hours', 일주일 동안 'for a week'. It is the same with or without 받침 — just add 동안. The hard part is the numbers: hours take native Korean numbers (한 시간, 두 시간), while minutes, days, weeks, 개월 and years take Sino-Korean ones (삼십 분, 삼 일, 이 주, 육 개월, 일 년); 달 takes native numbers (한 달), and for a few days you can also say 이틀, 사흘, 나흘. 동안 also follows a period: 방학 동안 'during the holidays', 휴가 동안. Ask with 얼마 동안, 몇 시간 동안 or 며칠 동안. 동안 does not change the verb, so any tense works: 한 시간 동안 기다렸어요, 일주일 동안 여행할 거예요. 'While I was doing …' (-는 동안) comes in Level 2B.
