V-아/어 봤어요 — have you ever …? — talking about experiences

Have you ever …? — talking about experiences. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 3: 콘서트에 가 봤어요? (Have you been to a concert? — experiences and plans).

What it means

-아/어 봤어요 talks about experience: 'I have (tried) …'. It is the 보다 of -아/어 보세요 (Lesson 1B-10, 'try …'), now in the past. Build it from the -아요/어요 form: take 요 off and add 봤어요 — 가요 → 가 봤어요, 먹어요 → 먹어 봤어요, 해요 → 해 봤어요. So 콘서트에 가 봤어요? asks 'Have you ever been to a concert?' To say no, 안 means you have not done it, while 아직 못 means you have not had the chance yet and would still like to: 아직 못 가 봤어요. With 보다 'to see' itself, Koreans simply say 봤어요 (그 영화 봤어요?), not 봐 봤어요. Plans and wishes go on 보다 too: 가 볼 거예요 'I'll go and see', 가 보고 싶어요 'I'd like to go'.
