A/V-지 않다 (1B 복습·확장) — not … — the long negative
Not … — the long negative. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 2: 취미가 뭐예요? (What's your hobby? — describing with verbs).
What it means
-지 않다 is the long way to say 'not': take 다 off and add 지 않아요 — 가지 않아요, 먹지 않아요, 비싸지 않아요. It means the same as 안 in front of the verb, which you know from 1A (안 가요, 안 먹어요). 안 is shorter and more common in conversation; -지 않아요 sounds a little more careful, and it is the usual choice in writing and in formal speech (-지 않습니다). It is also simpler with 하다 verbs built on a noun: 운동하지 않아요, with no need to put 안 in the middle (운동 안 해요). The past goes on 않다: 가지 않았어요. -지 않다 works with adjectives too — 어렵지 않아요, 지루하지 않아요 — and it goes well with 별로 'not very' and 전혀 'not at all': 별로 어렵지 않아요, 전혀 지루하지 않았어요.
