V-는 것 — turning an action into a noun — 'doing …'

Turning an action into a noun — 'doing …'. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 2: 취미가 뭐예요? (What's your hobby? — describing with verbs).

What it means

Put 것 'thing' after the -는 form from the last class and the action becomes a noun: 사진을 찍는 것 'taking photos'. Now it works like any noun — it takes 이/가, 은/는 and 을/를, and it can end in 이에요. That is how you name a hobby: 제 취미는 사진을 찍는 것이에요. It is also how you say what you like or dislike doing: 책을 읽는 것을 좋아해요, 청소하는 것을 싫어해요, 한국어를 배우는 것이 재미있어요. The -는 rules stay the same, so ㄹ drops: 만드는 것, 노는 것. In everyday speech 것 becomes 거 — 찍는 거예요, and 거를 · 거가 shorten to 걸 · 게: 읽는 걸 좋아해요, 배우는 게 재미있어요. When the hobby is a single noun you don't need it: 제 취미는 독서예요. For something already done, 것 follows -(으)ㄴ: 어제 먹은 것 'what I ate yesterday'.
