르 불규칙 — 르 words — 모르다 → 몰라요, 부르다 → 불러요

르 words — 모르다 → 몰라요, 부르다 → 불러요. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 6: 소포를 부치고 돈을 찾아요 (Sending a parcel and taking out money — errands).

What it means

Most words that end in 르다 change in a special way when 아/어 comes next (-아요/어요, -았/었-, -아서/어서, -아/어 주세요). The ㅡ of 르 drops out, and an extra ㄹ joins the syllable before as its 받침: 모르다 → 몰라요, 부르다 → 불러요. Choose 라 or 러 by the vowel before 르: ㅏ or ㅗ → ㄹ라 (빠르다 → 빨라요, 다르다 → 달라요, 고르다 → 골라요); any other vowel → ㄹ러 (부르다 → 불러요, 기르다 → 길러요, 누르다 → 눌러요). The past and -아서/어서 work the same way: 몰랐어요, 빨라서. Before a consonant nothing changes: 모르고, 빠르지만, 누르면, 다른 사람. Compare the ㅡ words of 1B-5: 아프다 → 아파요 only loses ㅡ, but a 르 word also gains a ㄹ — 몰라요, never 모라요. Careful: 모자라다 ends in 라, not 르, so it stays regular: 모자라요.
