N(이)라서 — because it is … — giving a reason with a noun

Because it is … — giving a reason with a noun. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 6: 소포를 부치고 돈을 찾아요 (Sending a parcel and taking out money — errands).

What it means

N(이)라서 gives a reason with a noun: 주말이라서 은행이 문을 안 열어요 'It's the weekend, so the bank is closed.' It is the noun partner of -아서/어서 from 1B-4: 바빠서 (adjective), 비가 와서 (verb), 시험 기간이라서 (noun). After 받침 add 이라서 (주말이라서, 학생이라서); after a vowel add 라서 (친구라서, 비행기라서). For 'because it is not …' use N이/가 아니라서: 학생이 아니라서 할인을 못 받았어요. Like -아서/어서, it never comes before 'please …' or 'let's …' — use N(이)니까 from 2A-5 there: 주말이니까 내일 가세요. The past goes on the last verb, not on 이라서: 휴가라서 고향에 갔어요.
