N 때문에 — because of … — giving the reason with a noun

Because of … — giving the reason with a noun. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2A, lesson 8: 정말 속상하겠어요 (You must be so upset — feelings and empathy).

What it means

N 때문에 gives the reason with a noun: 시험 때문에 바빠요 'I'm busy because of exams', 비 때문에 소풍을 못 갔어요 'we couldn't go on the picnic because of the rain'. 때문에 never changes: with or without 받침, write it after the noun with a space. To answer 왜요? with just the noun, end with 때문이에요: 왜 늦었어요? — 눈 때문이에요. The tense goes on the last verb: 시험 때문에 바빴어요. Compare what you know: after a verb or an adjective you use -아서/어서 (1B-4: 비가 와서 못 갔어요), and N(이)라서 (Lesson 6) means 'because it is N' (주말이라서 사람이 많아요). Like -아서/어서, 때문에 does not go before 'please …' or 'let's …' — use -(으)니까 (Lesson 5) for that: 비가 오니까 내일 갑시다. It usually comes with a bad result, so after a person it can sound like blame: 친구 때문에 늦었어요. (-기 때문에, after a verb, comes in Level 2B.)
